FORT MYERS –
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is currently investigating the theft of approximately 160 breeding pairs of rare parrots from a woman’s home.

Sandra Kortz called LCSO after discovering the birds were missing from her backyard aviary.

“I’m trying not to cry,” she said. “If you’ve lost a dog, you know what I’m saying when you say you’re losing part of the family.”

She told deputies that she believes someone entered her backyard and took the birds sometime Monday night. There was noticeable damage done to the aviary.

Kortz holds a license to own the birds through FWC.

The birds are estimated to be worth approximately $150,000.

“I was afraid my husband was going to have a heart attack because it’s like we lost half of our family,” said Kortz.

If you have any information on this crime, you’re asked to call the Lee County Sheriff’s Office at 239-477-1000, or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.
