The one-year-old male bird, named Sky, was swiped from Ackroyd Pets and Aquariums in Richmond on Sunday.
Police said a man walked into the store, grabbed the Indian Ringneck parakeet, put him in a black shopping bag and ran from the store.
The suspect is white, 35 to 40 years old, about 5-foot-10, with a heavy build, dark hair and glasses. He wore a blue-and-white-striped dress shirt, jean shorts and black sandals.
Sky is worth $700 and about 20 inches long, including a lengthy tail. He is powder blue and has a red beak and a metal band on one of his legs.
Cpl. Stephanie Ashton said pet-store staff describe the bird as “sweet and friendly,” but he won’t survive if he is released or escapes.
Ashton said Sky made several valiant attempts to escape before being stuffed in the bag.
