Lost Cockatiel in Hillsborough and steps to take if you find him

Every now and then accidents happen. In the case of Stonewall, a 15 year old Cockatiel, an accidentally dropped cage and open cage door gave him cause to panic and take flight out of reach of his owner.

This unfortunate incident happened on April 24. Stonewall had just been given a clean bill of health by his veterinarian during his regular checkup. He was on his way back to the car with his owner to go home when his cage was dropped.

“Initially, Stonewall flew to a tree in the veterinarian’s yard. He then flew to a tree located across the street on the Hillsborough First Aid Squad property,” said his sad owner. “A short time later, Stonewall left the area. He returned around 7 p.m. that night to the First Aid Squad property. A member of the First Aid Squad attempted to climb a ladder to get Stonewall out of their tree. Stonewall then flew back to the veterinarian’s property.”

On April 25, the owner spent the day standing and sitting under a pine tree talking to him.

“He would reply to my talking and would also make noises if I started to walk around, much like he did at home whenever I would leave the room,” said Stonewall’s owner. “We had placed a larger, portable cage with his evening cover, food and water, and a treat below the pine tree. We could not seem to coax him to come down out of the tree. Sometime later that evening he flew off to an unknown location.”

Can you help find Stonewall?

Stonewall can be described as medium gray with white on the edges of his wings, yellow face with orange/red cheeks, dark eyes, and thin plume above the top of his head. He can sing the “Mexican Hat Dance” as well as wolf whistle. He does not like to be picked up and must first be covered with a towel or other light material in order to be handled.

Even if you have never owned a bird yourself, that should not stop you from attempting to catch Stonewall if you see him. A very helpful document has been published on BirdChannel.com including some tips on what to do in order to keep a bird safely in your home until his owner can retrieve him. Find advice here on where to keep the bird, what to feed him, and how to offer him food and water.

Please contact the Amwell Bird Hospital if you see Stonewall or manage to catch him. The hospital is located at 49 East Mountain Road, Hillsborough, NJ 08844 Telephone: 908-369-7373
