PHEASANT could be on the menu for some Teessiders this Christmas after thieves struck at a farm.

More than 20 of the birds were stolen from a farm in the Norton area sometime last weekend.

The owner, who didn’t want to be identified, believes a gang was responsible.

“If it has been poachers they are normally in little groups,” he said. “It is the week before Christmas.

“They will just sell them on. It is a few bob for them.”

The pheasants were kept in a pen away from the owner’s home. The stolen birds were layers, providing new stock for the next shooting season.

The owner said: “It is not the value of the birds taken.

“It is the eggs they would have produced for next year.”

It’s thought the birds were killed before being taken away.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.
