a 40-year-old rare blue and golden macaw became the prized loot of a home burglary and now its owner is desperate to find it. The bird’s name is Charles and has lived with Alicia Aguayo for four decades in her Belen home. “Oh please, please, bring Charles back home,” Aguayo pleaded Monday afternoon to whoever broke into her home. “Without him here it’s so different. No one says ‘hello.’ Nobody says ‘good morning.’” Charles, known for eating burritos with Aguayo and stating its love for papas in the morning, was stolen while in its cage along with jewelry, plates and other antiques. The cage is made of iron bars, weighing more than 70 pounds and sitting 4 feet above the ground. “I wish they would just bring him back because if he catches a cold or if he gets too hot, he’ll die. And then what use is he to you?” Aguayo said. In her desperation, Aguayo put a sign in front of her home allowing drivers along the busy highway adjacent to her property to know to be on the lookout for Charles. The Valencia County Sheriff’s Office is investigating, but so far, detectives have no leads. A spokesperson said they hope if someone tries to sale the bird, the sheriff’s office will get tipped off. However, since macaws generally live 40-50 years, Charles is already near the end of his life span. The bird’s black market value is considerably low. Because of its age and routine molting, Charles is also missing feathers on its chest, which also drops the value of the bird. “Just please bring him home alive. He won’t last long and that’s what I’m scared of,” Aguayo said. Anyone who can help bring Charles home should contact the Valencia County Sheriff’s Department.
