An exotic bird in Lycoming County that was in the news before is in the news again, and this time it seems the pet was stolen.

Police said someone took the macaw and its cage from its home in Williamsport. A devastated James Erb pointed out where his parrot, Sunshine, was last seen. Erb’s exotic pet was reported missing Monday from his apartment in Williamsport just hours after photos were taken of the two during a visit to the Williamsport Sun Gazette.

“We go way back, 10 years. He was my 40 birthday present from me to me,” said Erb.

Monday, Erb said he was in the shower when someone broke in and took his beloved bird.

“There’s too much in my heart, my soul’s trapped in that bird,” said Erb.

He and Sunshine have been through this sort of thing before. In 2006, Sunshine attacked a burglar, injuring the man which led to his capture.

This time, Erb said, the bright green bird was in its cage when it was stolen.

Folks like Jay Spangenburg have grown used to seeing Erb and his pet together around town.

“It would sit on his shoulder, nice bird, beautiful bird, he’s heartbroken, really is,” said Spangenburg who owns Spangenburg’s Engravers.

As for Erb, he is pleading with whoever made off with Sunshine to return the bird to him, unharmed.

“My life isn’t the same and it will never be the same, so to whoever took him, I have one thing to say, please don’t hurt him,” said Erb.

Anyone with information about the stolen parrot should contact police in Williamsport, (570) 327-7540.
